Here are four small studies I just completed, each of them cropped from an Edward Hopper painting. Doing them accomplished two things: first, I was back in the studio, finding my eyes, in a way that close studies have accomplished the same for me in the past, and second, I explored a master colorist’s schemes in a way that calibrated my own. These are translations, or studies, more than they are copies.
